We usually ask the question “Do I have to?” when we’re told to do something that we don’t want to do.

Think back to your childhood. Every time you had to take medicine, do your chore or come in from playing, you resisted. I bet you thought you were done asking that question once you grew up? The truth is you probably stopped asking the question, but deep inside, you’re still resisting.

As we get ready to close out the year, think about the things you’ve resisted this year–even if they were good for you. Now consider how much better or improved your life-at work or home- could be if you stopped resisting. Usually, the very things that we resist are the stumbling blocks that we must overcome to get to the next level.

The possibilities open up when we get out of our own way. Most of the things my clients resist are the very things that get in their way. Here’s a short list of some things I see:

Using a calendar: Some of the reasons I hear for using a calendar consistently include not wanting to feel like their punching a clock, not having time to manage a calendar, preferring paper but having to use electronic or vice versa.

Maintaining a filing system: Clients often say they don’t have time to file. There are more important things to do. Unfortunately, they are usually drowning in paper and lose productivity and valuable time searching through their piles for valuable information.

Delegating work: Most business people, but especially entrepreneurial spirits have the hardest time delegating to others. They are so used to doing things on their own, that they’re afraid to let go of the reigns and trust someone else. Delegating would open up time to be more strategic and creative, if only they would try.

So as you plan for next year, I encourage you to challenge your fear. Think about what you need to do to get out of your way and open your productivity up.
