If you had to look back at goals list last year how many did you check off as accomplished?

If you were distracted, you aren’t alone. The entrepreneurial spirit in all of us pushes us to be in constant creation-often producing our best successes. Unfortunately, that drive can also be our biggest distraction.

Without proper systems and goal setting techniques in your arsenal, your accomplishments are likely the result of ‘Ready. Fire. Aim.” where you claim whatever you got instead of “Ready. Aim. Fire” where you focus on your target.

So how do you make the coming year your best ever?

Try out these goal setting exercises to help get you started.

Rearview Mirror

Hindsight is 20/20. If you’re a football fan, you know the power of being a Monday morning quarterback. Looking back, you can see all your plays clearly.

So look back at last year. List your wins. List your losses. List your “almost hads”.

In hindsight, what would you do again? What would you do differently?

Get out the Crystal Ball

Now let’s look forward to the end of this year. What will your biggest accomplishment be?

Make a list of what you want ‘More and Less of” in this year

Pick one of the things you want “More of” and make it a SMART Goal
Specific
Measurable
Achievable (and actionable)
Relevant (and realistic)
Timely

One last thing

  • Is your goal a BHAG-Big Hairy Audacious Goal? Does it stretch you? Move you out of your comfort zone enough? Is it to Big
  • What excites you?
  • What scares you?
  • What are your obstacles?
  • What are your resources?
  • When you hit this goal you will feel…
  • When you hit this goal you will be able to..

Pumped Up?

Good. Once you feel good about your answers, the next step in the process is to put strategies in place to address your obstacles, conquer your fears and set you up for success.

Lay out your specific plan for hitting your goal–on purpose.
