Who can’t I stand? My stepdaughter Erica! Now don’t get it twisted, I love her to death. I helped raise her from she was a cute 6 year old. I’d share her picture but she’d kill me or worse, never bake for me again. And now we’re back to the reason I can’t stand her!
What’s the problem Nicole? You ask.
Well you see it all started with our church’s Consecration fast. The first week we gave up sweets and desserts. It was tough…. especially when she baked two dozen cupcakes for a friend’s birthday!
It got easier as I realized how perfectly two goals were aligned by the simple sacrifice of sweets: 1) get closer to God and 2) kick start my plan to hit my goal weight.
So why can’t I stand my stepdaughter? Well she’s listening to me.
You see I’ve been on a roll with working my 2016 goals. And there are a few things–big things– due on my list right before my birthday. So one day I came up with the bright idea to continue withholding baked goods until I check these goals off my list. That way I can enjoy birthday cake in bliss!
Well won’t ya know it? Erica is taking this accountability thing seriously. She. will. not. bake. for. me. Not one little cookie. No cupcakes. No nothing.
Who knew she had it in her all these years to listen to me?
All kidding and joking aside, Erica’s follow through is exactly what I need. You see when you declare your intentions to someone you trust, they stand by you. They motivate you. They kick you in the pants when you need it. I’ve been blessed with several accountability partners in my life who hold my feet to the fire or cheer me on when I need it (shout out to Maureen, Heather, Dawn, Janice, Athenee and yes, Erica)!
Who do you have in your corner? Who do you trust to withhold baked goods? Who would ask you the point blank, no holds-barred question when you need it?
When it comes to working on goals, especially when forming new habits, you need to use the buddy system when you’re fighting the uphill battle of change.
We’re not meant to go out alone. Find someone who follows through enough to make you say you can’t stand them either!
