Every business loves to be busy. It’s the sign that we are engaged with our clients, active in our industry and doing what we love to do—isn’t it?
I often get called to consult with clients who report being very busy, but not in the things that move their business forward. In their case, busyness, is getting in the way of the success of their business.
When I hear someone say “we’re very busy” I ask myself if they are busy chasing their information and resources or if they are active and productive doing what they love.
As professionals and business owners we go into our chosen profession full of passion and excitement about our service and products. But all too quickly, the glow can wear off. Unfortunately, what usually happens is that the administrative, back end things that we “have to do” get in the way of what we “want to do”. If we ignore these things, we end up with backlogs of work, loss of productivity and failures where we should be celebrating successes.
So how busy are you? Are you putting out fires, searching for information, important documents or struggling to keep up with phone calls?
To figure out if you are involved in “busyness” or your business, keep a list for a few days of the things that take up most of your time.
If you’re spending a lot of time on the mundane things like trying to schedule a meeting vs. being in the meeting, then it’s time to examine your time management and information management systems and make sure you have a way to handle the busy work that’s draining your personal productivity.
